Loewe Foundation Announces Winner of 2023 Craft Prize

The winner of the 2023 craft prize has been announced by the Loewe Foundation.

This annual prize, established in 2016, aims to recognize excellence, artistic merit, and innovation in modern craftsmanship.

It highlights the importance of craft in contemporary culture and honors artists who are shaping the future of the craft.

Inazaki, an artist from Takamatsu, Japan, emerged as the winner among 30 finalists.

The jury, which included Loewe creative director Jonathan Anderson and Abraham Thomas, a curator at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, selected Inazaki.

The finalists were chosen from over 2,700 submissions across various mediums such as ceramics, woodwork, textiles, leather, glass, metal, jewelry, and lacquer.

This year’s selection of works showcases meditative and time-intensive techniques, demonstrating the artists’ skillful manipulation of materials.

Inazaki was particularly recognized for her intricate ceramic sculpture called Metanoia, 2019.

The exhibition of the shortlisted works will be held at Isamu Noguchi’s Studio in The Noguchi Museum in New York until June 18, 2023, and will also be available to view online.

An exhibition catalogue documenting each finalist’s piece will accompany the exhibition..
